Trump shares Franklin Graham letter addressing ‘heaven-bound’ comments

by Tola Mbakwe

US President Donald Trump has shared a copy of a letter sent to him by evangelist Rev Franklin Graham. He posted the scanned document on the social media platform Truth Social, without an accompanying caption, on Sunday.

In the letter, dated 15th October 2025, Rev Graham congratulated Mr Trump on the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, calling his leadership “historic”.

“This is answer to much prayer. Jesus said, ‘Blessed are the peacemakers’ (Matthew 5:9) – and Mr President, that is what you are.”

Rev Graham also addressed the President’s comments last year, in which he joked that he is “not heaven-bound” whilst en route to Israel. Hours ahead of the first Israeli hostages being handed over, the President told reporters on board Air Force One: “I don’t think there’s anything going to get me into heaven.”

It was in response to Fox News’ Peter Doocey, who reminded the President that he had wanted to secure a Ukrainian peace deal to increase his chances of reaching eternity.

The son of the late Billy Graham wrote: “Maybe your response was in jest, but it is an important issue to know for certain that your soul is secure and will spend eternity in the presence of God. The only One who can save us from Hell is Jesus Christ.”

He then briefly explained the gospel, ending the letter by quoting Romans 10:9: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

The post was reshared on X by US House Speaker Mike Johnson, with the caption: “On this Palm Sunday, President Trump shared his letter from Franklin Graham explaining the only path to Heaven is through Jesus, our Saviour.” Rev Graham also reposted it.

Rev Graham has been a long-time supporter of Mr Trump, saying he believes God “raised up Trump” to be president.

The evangelist delivered an impassioned address at the 2025 presidential inauguration ceremony and prayed that God would bless the United States through Mr Trump.
