Roger Forster, the founder of Ichthus Fellowship, has died at the age of 90.
His ministry says he was peaceful and at home as he "passed into glory" on Wednesday.
Forster was one of the most prominent figures in the UK evangelical scene during the 20th century.
He'd served as vice-president at Tearfund, was a member of the Evangelical Alliance Council and was a driving force in the March for Jesus Movement.
In a statement to Premier, a spokesperson for Ichthus said: "We celebrate his incredible and inspirational life of service to our Lord Jesus, as an evangelist, theologian, pastor, mentor and most importantly, devoted disciple of Jesus.
"We also deeply feel his loss, and mourn with his wife Faith, his children and grandchildren.
"He was a father in the faith to thousands of people in the UK and all over the world, and he ‘ran the race’ right until the end."
Forster studied Maths and Theology at the University of Cambridge before joining the RAF.
He later worked as an evangelist before committing his life to the house church movement and the Ichthus Fellowship.
Paying tribute on premierchristianity.com, worship leader Graham Kendrick said: "He seemed to have the ability to knock down every counter argument to the Gospel just before you thought of it, as well as several you never knew existed.
"It was apologetics on steroids, but he was clearly not there just to win arguments, I could tell he was out to win hearts and make disciples for Jesus."
