A church treasurer, for a church in Nottingham, is to stand trial after denying a series of criminal charges.

John Broughton, 77, of South Scarle, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on June 23 where he pleaded not guilty to eight charges.

The charges relate to a series of alleged incidents involving St Cyprian's Church in Sneinton between 2016 and 2020.

Broughton is accused of abusing his position as treasurer by presenting cheques drawn on a NatWest account for thousands of pounds for payment into his own bank account.

He's also accused of stealing money between April 10, 2017, and January 1, 2020, to the value of £3,130.89 belonging to the organ fund for the Parochial Church Council of St Cyprian's Church, Sneinton.

Further charges involve allegations that he published a false statement between January 1, 2018, and January 1, 2020, regarding annual financial reports.

Between May 1, 2019, and September 1, 2020, Broughton is accused of stealing money to the value of £1,250 which had been donated by the 100 Club belonging to the Parochial Church Council of St Cyprian's Church.

Other charges relate to forgery of banker's cheques.

A trial date has been set for the week of February 28 next year.

Broughton remains on unconditional bail.
