Mariam is often a top-ranked student and fainted when she heard she had failed every single exam she took.
She had been hoping to go to medical school: "I was completely shocked," she told the BBC.
"I couldn't hear anyone, I couldn't speak. I thought how can that happen? How can I get zero?"
The results were so low that there have been suspicions of foul play and initially there was speculation that Malak was failed on purpose because she's a member of Egypt's Coptic Christian minority.
These rumours were dismissed but her family say she is a victim of corruption.
A Facebook page has been set up, 'Mariam's tear' as well as a Twitter hashtag #IBelieveMariamMalak.
Her brother, Mina, said: "Either the school or the examination board swapped her papers with another pupil who obviously wasn't doing as well."
Stories of cheating or corruption are not uncommon, however few stories have received as much interest.
One woman tweeted: "It's not just that they stole her marks, they also stole her future and dreams."
Another Twitter user wrote: "Imagine getting zero in 7 subjects!! It's a disaster!"
