Three Christian teachers shot dead by suspected extremists in Kenya

by Heather Preston

Three Christian teachers were murdered in eastern Kenya earlier this month in an attack suspected to be by jihadist group, Al Shabab.

The armed militants targeted the employees of Kamuthe Primary School on the 13th January whilst they slept in staff accommodation.

One teacher allegedly escaped via a nearby window while a fourth teacher was shot twice in the leg.

The names of those who died were Samwel Mutua, 29, Caleb Mushimbi, 28, and Caleb's cousin, Titus Mushimbi, 29.

A female Christian teacher was spared together with a nurse and young child, however the nurse was forced to recite the Islamic creed, shahada which states "there is no god but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God".

Following the ambush, the attackers burned down a nearby abandoned police post and bombed a telecommunications mast in the market place.

According to Mission Networks News (MNN) the local Muslim teachers were separated from non-locals, who were assumed to be Christians and had been attending a local church.

The three Christian men were then shot dead.

Greg Musselman of Voice of the Martyrs Canada told MNN: "One of the attackers reportedly said that 'we cannot allow infidels to teach our children'.

"They didn't want the ideology from what they think is the West because they link Christianity with the West. Of course we know that's not true."

It comes after three similar attacks in the area in the past two weeks.

Kenya is number 44 on the Open Doors 2020 World World List of countries where Christians experience the most extreme persecution across the world.
