The Chosen ends partnership with Angel Studios over alleged breaches of contract

by Lydia Davies

The Chosen series on the life of Jesus Christ has ended its partnership with Angel Studios due to alleged breaches of contract.

Angel Studios has announced its intention to appeal the termination of the contract.

Dallas Jenkins, the creator of the popular Christian franchise that debuted on the Angel Studios app in 2019, shared a video message on social media on Wednesday, explaining why they decided to part ways with the distributor.

Jenkins expressed appreciation for Angel Studios' contribution to launching his show and the "total creative freedom and ownership" he received through their collaboration. However, he noted that "the burden we bore was far greater than any of us anticipated for the show's continuation."

He further noted, "Of your pay-it-forward contributions, less than half actually came to us, somewhere around 40 per cent. The rest went to marketing and Angel Studios."

Angel Studios disputed Jenkins' claims regarding the financial arrangement. According to a statement to The Christian Post, they insisted that "the deal was a 50/50 split after expenses."

After deciding to sever ties with Angel Studios, Jenkins stated they sought arbitration rather than litigation: "We simply had an arbitrator decide whether or not the contract had been breached and should be terminated." He reported that the arbitrator "comprehensively affirmed our position" and concluded that "the contract is indeed terminated and 'The Chosen’s' relationship with Angel Studios is effectively over."

Angel Studios CEO Neil Harmon expressed his disappointment but remained proud of their role in the show's success, telling the outlet: "Sadly, The Chosen, Inc. chose to terminate its agreement with us. We hope that one day the agreement will be restored — and we plan to pursue the appeal provision that Angel and The Chosen agreed to as the process for resolving disagreements privately."
