A street preacher stopped by police outside King’s Cross Station has told Premier News that the gospel “irritates people” because it brings conviction.
Transport Police have launched a senior-level investigation after a video showing an officer stopping Mad 4 Jesus Ministries—apparently due to noise complaints—went viral.
Monique Bailey, who leads Mad 4 Jesus Ministries, told Premier the incident was highly unusual.
British Transport Police said the group had been using a megaphone without a permit. However, Bailey said she was not informed at the time that this was the reason she was being stopped.
She recalled moving behind bollards after station officials suggested it would be less disruptive for the public. “I want to abide by the law,” Bailey said.
In footage posted to Bailey’s personal account, the officer can be heard saying, “It’s so loud... These people just want to do their journey, they’re not coming here to listen to you.”
Bailey then asks if a “happy clappy song” would be a better alternative, to which the officer responds, “I just think it’s all wrong.”
“With any evangelist, you’re going to have problems on the streets—more so with the general public. We’re crazy for the Lord! We go all in for the word of God,” she said.
“Even some Christians don’t like [street preaching]. We speak about grace and love all the time, but we also have to speak about repentance and sin. The gospel irritates people, if you don’t believe in it.”
Bailey told Premier she’s used to having positive encounters with police, who have “protected” her and the group in the past at crowded events like Notting Hill Carnival.
After initially being interrupted by the officer, Bailey said she later spoke with a second officer—who accepted prayer.
“He was listening,” she said. “I found the opportunity to say: ‘Do you know Jesus?’”
