Choral singing has started again at Westminster Abbey for the first time in five months after Government guidance changed last week.
Groups of singers are now allowed to perform or lead sung worship whether they are professional or not, under the latest Government regulations, but the congregation still cannot join in.
On Sunday, six members of Westminster Abbey’s famous choir in London sang at the 11.15am Eucharist - the first sung service there since the lockdown was imposed 21 weeks ago.
The full choir last sang together on 17th March, two days before lockdown, meaning the musical silence is the longest the Abbey has had since the Second World War.
The six professional male singers sang standing 2 metres apart at the east end of the Abbey while the congregation gathered at the west end of the church.
For the moment, choral services have resumed only on Sundays but the Abbey plans to build up to a full schedule over the coming weeks and months.
