The Pope called on Catholic parishes, convents and monasteries across Europe to do the same.
Father Kevin Robinson, from Our Ladye Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich, London, told Premier's News Hour that scraping the so called 'bedroom tax' could help: "Let the government say to all of those people that are caught up in that financial dilemma if we're taking you on a spare bedroom, we are erasing that tax if you will use that room for a person or a child or a family that could be helped."
He added that "It's no good just being little sentimental Christians in a secluded safe Western culture and cocooning ourselves from the reality of what's happening elsewhere.
"We need to recognise them as Christians in their own right, these are not people who need to be re-baptised or born-again and when they come here and settle here and we need to respect them and facilitate their Christian rights and Christian worship in the forms with which they're familiar."
Over the weekend Pope Francis said: "Faced with the tragedy of tens of thousands of refugees who are fleeing death by war and by hunger, and who are on a path toward a hope for life, the Gospel calls us to be neighbours to the smallest and most abandoned, to give them concrete hope."
He added: "May every parish, every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe host a family, starting with my diocese of Rome."
Earlier today Cyprus also agreed to take in around 300 people.
