Scouts God-free Promise

The Scout Association's following the Guides and planning a God-free Promise for members.

It's confirmed it'll meet next month to word a pledge for people with no faith to use, although unlike the Guides the Promise to "do my duty to God" will remain as an option.

Last week the Guides removed a reference to God in its pledge, instead members will say they will be "true to themselves". Christian journalist Peter Hitchens warned in his newspaper column yesterday about the Guides' decision, suggesting that it's just the latest small change, turning Britain into "somewhere else". On Premier's News Hour he told Victoria Laurence that people don't notice because each change is seemingly so tiny:

A statement from the Scout Association said:

"We received over 15,000 responses to an online survey which explored areas such as how we express our Promise, as well as our activity programme, policies and procedures.

"The results of this work is being analysed by an independent organisation and the outcome will be published later in 2013.

"As part of this work we are looking at how we might offer a promise option for those who have no affirmed faith.

"We do not plan to change the core Promise but to offer an option for those who are without faith but wish to be part the Scout Movement and are keen to support the Movement's values and developmental work with young people who are drawn from the widest range of cultures, belief systems and communities.

"The Trustees of the Scout Association will meet in early July and will agree the way forward for The Scout Movement."
