A Florida public school has shut down a weekly video series promoting witchcraft after pressure from a Christian legal group.
West Orange High School in Orange County had been airing a student-produced segment called Witchy Wednesday during mid-week announcements, according to the Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit legal organisation focused on religious freedom
The videos included instructions on spells, moon worship, and rituals, prompting backlash from parents and faith groups.
Liberty Counsel argued the series amounted to "religious instruction" and infringed on the rights of Christian students.
In a letter to Orange County Public Schools (OCPS), the group demanded the school allow opt-outs and warned the videos violated Supreme Court precedents protecting religious freedom.
According to Liberty Counsel, the first video aired on 10th September and opened with, “Good morning, witches,” followed by guidance on casting a “Light of Insight” spell and conducting a personal cleansing ritual.
The group said such content places students with Christian beliefs in a difficult position.
“Christian students and parents have a right not to participate in religious practices that contradict their faith,” said Mat Staver, Liberty Counsel's founder.
“The First Amendment protects their right to opt out and to share their views equally.”
Following the complaint, OCPS directed the school to discontinue the series.
Liberty Counsel has requested a written response from the district by 30th September and is still waiting.
The school district has not publicly commented on the matter.
