A Romanian neurosurgeon has said that God is present in his operating room, and that some medical moments he has witnessed cannot be explained by science alone.

Speaking to Q Magazine, Dr Iustinian Simion said his experience as a surgeon had shown him the limits of human ability and the reality of divine intervention.

“I couldn’t quantify how much is human and how much is divine power in a neurosurgical operation,” he said. “But I know for sure that without God, man can achieve nothing. It’s an illusion to think otherwise.”

Dr Simion said it would be irrational for doctors to take full credit for successful surgeries, adding that physicians were “part of a greater work of healing.” He explained that surgeons walked “a fine line between remaining balanced and becoming self-deified,” and warned against pride in medical achievement.

“Doctors are merely tools in a much greater work, the healing of others,” he said. “The more finely polished the tools, the greater the chance for true healing.”

Outside the hospital, Dr Simion devoted himself to Orthodox liturgical music.

In 2011, he founded the Anastasios Byzantine Choir in Târgu Mureș, which included professionals from various fields.

He said the choir had become “a breath of air” that gave him peace and strength after long, demanding days of surgery.
