Rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo disguised themselves in priestly robes before launching a deadly attack on a Christian community in Beni Territory, according to reports.
The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) fighters stole church garments in Ngite village on August 13, posing as a visiting congregation.
When they entered Mayi Moya later that evening, villagers welcomed them warmly, only to discover too late that they were armed.
“They came into our church and stole the robes of our priests and choir; they then put them on, posing as a delegation from another church,” one official said.
“To use the very symbols of worship to deceive and destroy is beyond evil.”
Survivor Jean-Philip Mboosa told International Christian Concern (ICC): “They greeted us with smiles and songs, and it looked so real. But when I went closer, I noticed guns hidden beneath the robes. That’s when my heart sank. I knew we had been tricked.”
At least eight people were abducted and three men were shot dead, according to ICC. Homes and shops were also looted and set on fire.
Mary Kavora, who lost a cousin, said: “They were dressed in priestly robes and everyone in the village believed they were holy men. Who would ever doubt people dressed as servants of God? My cousin followed them while singing, thinking it was worship. He never came back.”
Local priests are urging greater protection but remain resolute, saying: “They may have stolen our robes and shed our blood, but they cannot steal our faith. We will rebuild our lives, we will worship again, and our voices will not be silenced.”
