Prominent church planter killed after stopping to help stranded motorist

by Premier Journalist

A well-known pastor and church planter has been killed in an accident in the US state of Texas. John Powell, who was the lead pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in New Caney, Texas, died after being struck by a vehicle as he attempted to help a stranded motorist.

News of Powell's death was shared by Dr. Russell Moore, who is the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission - the public-policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).

"I am shocked and shaken and grieving this morning, beyond what I can say,” Moore tweeted. “My former student John Powell was killed last night, hit by an eighteen wheeler while helping stranded motorists off of a highway.”

In a statement, Moore said Powell was a former student and "one of the best men he ever knew".

"He was everything I would want any of my sons to be when they grow up," Moore added. "I was incredibly proud of him. I can't wait to see him again. And right now I'm just crushed."

Powell is survived by his wife and four young children. He was formerly the director of admissions at Southern Seminary and discipleship pastor at Carlisle Avenue Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

A memorial fund has been set up on GoFundMe to provide financial assistance to the Powell family.

It reads: "We are asking for friends and family to help care for the Powell family as they deal with unspeakable tragedy and grief. As they have shown all of their family and friends love in times past, let us now, as the body of Christ, show them love and care."

Just under $130,000 has been raised so far.

Tributes to John have been pouring in on the page. "What an amazing man that impacted so many," one person wrote. "God bless Katherine and their four beautiful children. You are in our prayers." Another added: "John was a friend, mentor, and extraordinary example. Praying for you and the kids, Katherine."
