Reports from the country suggest that Revd Jim Mulcahy, 72, has been fined around £23 and been told he needs to leave Russia within five days.
The Tass state news agency says that his lawyer, Karina Artyunyan, says the Metropolitan Community Church leader has to leave.
Russia has not encouraged LGBT rights in the past and an non-governmental group, the Russian LGBT Network, said in a post on Facebook that he was detained on Saturday at an LGBT community centre in the Volga River city of Samara.
His lawyer, Karina Artyunyan, said a city court ruled that Mr Mulcahy had violated the terms of his tourist visa by engaging in religious activities.
The West has criticised Russia in the past for laws that restrict the rights of minority religious groups as well as people in the country who identify as gay or lesbian.
