Prisoner on death row pleads for Pope Francis to help with his release

by Alex Collett

An Bahraini prisoner who is currently on death row is pleading with Pope Francis to help free him.

Mohammed Ramadhan, a former airport security guard, alleges that he was accused of a bombing and tortured into confessing it, which resulted him being sentenced to death row.

The 39-year-old is urging the Pontiff, who has just arrived in Bahrain for a three day visit, to help secure his release.

According to the Guardian, a letter was shared to the publication through the London-based Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD) showing the plea to Pope Francis.

The letter asks the Pontiff to ask the King of Bahrain "to release me and reunite me with my family and children."

Mr Ramadhan, who has been in prison for nine years, and Husain Moosa, 36, - both Shia Muslims - were convicted of a bombing that resulted in the death of a police officer in 2014.

Pope Francis has begun his visit to the largest Catholic church in the Gulf region. He tweeted yesterday: "Tomorrow I leave for an Apostolic Journey to the Kingdom of Bahrain, a Journey under the banner of dialogue.

"I will participate in a Forum focusing on the inescapable need for the East and West to come closer together for the good of human coexistence."
