Bronislaw Morawiec withdrew the money from the Vatican's bank in 2009 whilst serving at Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome. Pope Francis regularly visits this church.
Morawiec claimed the money was needed to pay someone outside of Santa Maria Maggiore to help a property deal the church was involved in. Santa Maria owns several properties bought from donation money.
When the church's archpriest Santos Abril y Castello saw the money was missing, he asked Morawiec to produce a document proving the alleged property deal was real.
Morawiec then provided a document which he said was drafted by a Swiss company. However, the document contained an incorrect spelling of Switzerland, instead spelling it "Swizerland". This raised concerns with archpriest Castello.
The Vatican prosecution said in court that the document and Morawiec's claims contained "glaring and unjustifiable anomalies."
Morawiec may not be jailed, depending on his appeal.
Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, a Vatican accountant, is currently on trial accused of trying to bring millions of dollars in cash into Italy from Switzerland, to help people avoid taxes.
The Vatican issued staff with a manual on financial ethics and accountability earlier this month.
