Popular preacher Beth Moore announces Twitter break and says she's putting herself 'in time out'

by Chantalle Edmunds

Christian preacher and author Beth Moore announced on Twitter she's taking a break from the platform.

She cited two reasons for the self-imposed break stating she felt "'a bit too strongly about some things to be on Twitter right now."

On April 9 she wrote: "Morning, y'all! Jumping on here to say I'm putting myself in time out for a bit. I think we'll both be relieved. LOL. 2 reasons:1) I feel a bit too strongly about some things to be on Twitter right now. I don't trust myself. Gonna punch somebody. I can either get ugly or get off.

"And the fact is, I really do want to walk with Jesus in the Spirit and not burn stuff down. Mind you, I don't take back a word I've said. (See? This is where I go awry. The longer I talk.) I just think it's enough for now. 2) I'm writing again & just hit that groove writers crave ... when you get really immersed and feel a lot of life in it and, for those of us in the faith, a lot of Spirit. You go with it when it comes.

Please know all's well & I'll be back in these tweety bird woods soon. I was gonna tell you to behave but sometimes behaving's overrated."

The break comes just days after Moore, 63, asked Christians for forgiveness if she was "complicit" in making complementarianism a "litmus" test for faith.

"Let me be blunt. When you functionally treat complementarianism a doctrine of MAN as if it belongs among the matters of 1st importance, yea, as a litmus test for where one stands on inerrancy & authority of Scripture, you are the ones who have misused Scripture. You went too far," she said.

"I beg your forgiveness where I was complicit. I could not see it for what it was until 2016. I plead your forgiveness for how I just submitted to it and supported it and taught it. I trusted that the motives were godly. I have not lost my mind. Nor my doctrine. Just my naivety."

Complementarian theology sees men and women as being of equal worth in the sight of God. However, it regards them as having different roles, particularly when it comes to marriage and church leadership.

The Religion News Service asked Moore if she was now egalitarian, a school of thought that believes men and women are equal and can serve in the same functions.

She answered: "I'm not going to be pushed into either category right now because that's not my point. My point is that it has taken on the importance of a first tier doctrine."

On April 8, also on Twitter, Moore referred to articles she had seen following on from her apology:

"Per yesterday’s thread as I catch glimpses of articles with all sorts of spins on it. I meant exactly what I said. I did not mean more than I said. I did not mean less than I said. Quote it all you want. Discuss, debate & hate it all you want. But please keep it to what I said.

"Let’s bring responsible reading back. Responsible reading reads what is written rather than reading into it," she added.

Later that same day she tweeted: "I need a vacation."

In March, Moore announced she was splitting from the Southern Baptist denomination.
