Pope Leo XIV has called for the immediate release of hostages in Haiti and urged continued aid for people affected by deadly floods and mudslides in Nepal and Tibet.

Speaking after Sunday’s Angelus prayer in Castel Gandolfo, he condemned a recent massacre in Kenscoff, Haiti, where people were killed and others kidnapped.

“From Haiti come terrible reports of the grave massacre perpetrated in Kenscoff, in which numerous people have lost their lives while others have been kidnapped. I express my prayerful closeness to the victims and their families and ask that all the hostages be released without delay.”

The Pope also prayed for victims of flooding and mudslides in Nepal and Tibet. More than 700 people have reportedly died and at least 3,000 remain missing.

“May everyone’s concern and commitment," he prayed, "help to alleviate suffering and bring the necessary assistance to the affected populations.”

The Vatican said it had sent financial assistance to Caritas Nepal for food, basic supplies and shelter.

Pope Leo also called for prayers for peace and marked the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, which takes place on 1 September.

“I invite everyone to join in prayer and action, that we may become channels of the living water of God’s peace, refreshing our wounded world.”
