Pope holds audience with DRC president

by Hannah Tooley

DRC has been in and out of conflict since the 1960's.

Around six million people have been killed to date, from war as well as disease and lack of food.

President Joseph Kabila and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for Relations with States, met the pontiff on Monday to discuss how the DRC and the Catholic Church can better work together to prevent further suffering.

The Vatican said that the group discussed the challenges posed by the current political situation in DRC as well as the recent fighting in the capital city, Kinshasa.

The pope stressed the importance of collaboration between political factions, religious groups and wider society.

Joseph Kabila, the archbishop and the pope spoke about working on "respectful and inclusive dialogue for the stability of peace in the country," according to the Vatican.

The pope also pushed for an ending to the violence being endured by the general population, including mass rapes and serious sexual violence used as a form of control.

Urgent cooperation at national and international level was encouraged so that the DRC might be able to work towards peace.
