Pope Francis urges mercy as backs Catholic charity

by Hannah Tooley

Aid to the Church in Need's (ACN) "Be God's Mercy" initiative will be launched on Friday in Rome.

John Pontifex, from Aid to the Church in Need, told Premier it is important that people engage with the Pope's message.

He said: "Pope Francis considers the core of the Gospel message to be mercy, we need not look very far around our world to see the extent to which there are so many people in need of God's mercy, in need of what Pope Francis calls God's loving caress, which can only be enabled through the work of those who are actually inspired by this notion to be God's mercy, and it's essential to Pope Francis' vision of his papency."

John Pontifex also said the Middle East was one area where believers can show mercy: "problems there show no signs of improving to any great extent, thousands upon thousands of people are without basic, basic support because they've had to flee persecution, flee bombardment and flee extreme poverty."

In his message, the Pope calls on people to "carry out works of mercy together with ACN in every corner of the world, in order to meet the many, many needs of today".

ACN has worked with Christians and others who fled Islamic State in Iraq and the pope has been involved by supporting an ACN project providing medicine for St Joseph's Clinic, Erbil.

The centre which serves 2,800 displaced people.

ACN projects that have been supported during the four-month "Be God's Mercy" campaign include prison ministry, drug rehabilitation centres and support groups for victims of domestic abuse.

Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore, Pakistan, has also spoken out about aid projects.

He will give an account of the atrocity on Sunday, 27th March in Lahore where suicide bombers killed 76 people in a park, many of them Christians celebrating on Easter Day.

The initiative ends on 4th October with the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, a saint loved by the Pope's heart.
