Pope Francis travels to Assisi for World Day of Prayer for Peace

by Hannah Tooley

Pope Francis is returning to Assisi to observe the day, which is celebrated annually on 20th September.

Speaking earlier in the week he said: "Today, more than ever, we need peace in this war which is everywhere in the world. Let us Pray for peace."

He told Vatican Radio he will be travelling to Assisi to walk in the steps of Saint John Paul II who called for the World Day of Prayer for Peace thirty years ago.

"Following the example of Saint Francis of Assisi, a man of brotherhood and meekness, we are all called to offer a strong testimony to the world of our common commitment twoards peace and reconciliation between peoples," he said.

It falls a day before the International Day of Peace, declared by the United Nations.

The Day's theme for 2016 is 'The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace'.

Speaking on Premier's Inspirational Breakfast Caroline Farrow, from Catholic Voices, said: "It's interfaith outreach so all the representatives of the major faith groups will be there.

"It's not about the Pope leading a gathering. He's not commander-in-chief. He's one of a number of different faiths."
