Pastor protests 'blasphemous' Jesus musical

by Lydia Davies

Rev Daniel Henderson of Moneyslane Free Presbyterian Church led a protest against a local performance of Jesus Christ Superstar at Newry Town Hall, calling it “blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Alongside ministers from Mourne and Mount Merrion Free Presbyterian Churches, Henderson decried the portrayal of Jesus as a “burnt-out celebrity” in the rock opera, which he argued misrepresented the Savior’s true mission, as reported by The County Down Outlook.

Henderson stated: “The production makes a mockery of the Saviour and the Bible record of His life.”

He added, “Jesus Christ was not a ‘Superstar’. He is saviour. He came to die for our sins.”

The protest, which took place outside the venue during the show’s final night, saw around 45-50 Free Presbyterians singing hymns and distributing Gospel tracts to attendees.
