Notre Dame choir threatens Christmas Eve strike

The choristers at Notre Dame Cathedral are threatening continued strike action, meaning no midnight mass for the first time since 1803.

The singers are protesting against the removal of five singing teachers, including the "totally abusive and unjustified" dismissal of a Gregorian chant instructor - a teacher of unaccompanied songs in Latin.

The dismissals were caused by a lack of funding after the cathedral lost out on concert dates because of the fire in April.

The nearby church of Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois will host mass instead with half of the choristers, with the other half performing at a circus tent.

The Cathedral has kept providing the late night service on Christmas Eve for over 200 years.

In April 2019, the historic gothic building was damaged by a fire, with Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron pledging a five-year restoration project to rebuild the spire and roof.

Singers have already boycotted one concert last Tuesday at Saint-Sulpice church.
