'Not a single person said a word' - Christian rugby pundit Monye claims racial abuse at stadium ignored

by Premier Journalist

Police say they are investigating after a Christian rugby pundit claimed he was racially abused by an Exeter Chiefs supporter after their victory over Gloucester on Sunday.

Ugo Monye, who represented Harlequins, England and the British and Irish Lions during his career as a player, expressed his anger on X/Twitter that none of the surrounding fans in the staidum responded at all.

"Leaving Sandy Park and one supporter running through crowd starts shouting 'N****, N****…' disgraceful. Not a single person said a word, challenged or even reported it.

"He walks off after a mild scuffle and fans are now telling me 'We’re with you' B*****s you’re with me. You weren’t with me when you saw and heard the most blatant racism I’ve seen from a supporter at a live game. So fed up"

The 40-year-old was working at the Premiership match as part of the punditry team on TNT Sport.

In April 2021, Monye was appointed as the head of a  new diversity and inclusion advisory group at the RFU, English rugby's governing body.

"We have been made aware of an incident which happened on Sunday 19 November at Sandy Park in Exeter," Supt Antony Hart from Devon and Cornwall Police told the BBC.

"Our enquiries are currently ongoing into the incident.

"We take all reports of hate crime extremely seriously and we will not tolerate this behaviour."

Exeter Chiefs have also apologised to Monye.
