North Korean Christians are in prison camps while Trump calls Kim Jong Un a 'great leader'

by Cara Bentley

Open Doors, who serve persecuted Christians worldwide, say amidst all the talk of denuclearisation, people should remember the 'shocking' abuse of Christians in North Korea.

The two leaders are meeting to discuss topics such as the future of North Korea, with Trump suggesting they could be an 'economic powerhouse' if they give up their nuclear weapons.

Something that is not on the official agenda is the treatment of their own citizens.

In North Korea, every aspect of life is controlled by the state, with food owned and distributed by the government and the capital Pyongyang has reportedly informed the UN that it is facing food shortfall of 1.4 million tonnes in 2019.

In January it cut daily rations from 550 to 300 grams per person per day.

It is also number one on the 2019 Open Doors World Watch List, ranking the worst places to be a Christian, and has been since 2002.

Erin James from Open Doors told Premier that a significant conversation about the treatment of Christians was unlikely to happen: "Last year he did say that he raised them in private....but what does that really mean? Does that mean a passing sentence? Does that mean a really earnest discussion? So I wouldn't be surprised if, to please those voters, he says again that he did in fact raise them but I would question how heavily he'll push on the issue".

Last year North Korean defector, John Choi (name changed) spoke of his disappointment that such an important opportunity had been missed.

James said: "We know that there are about 50-70,000 Christians in camps in North Korea who have been imprisoned purely for believing in a higher power than Kim Jong Un, so it's a really, really terrible fear. It's a dictatorship and Christians have absolutely no freedom.

"Christians really do have to keep their faith completely secret or risk death or imprisonment and in fact many won't even tell their own children that they're a Christian because children are taught to inform on their parents".

She said Christians hide their Bibles and read them only when it's safe to do so.

The meeting between the two leaders is being held in Vietnam, with Trump using it as a comparison for the type of country North Korea could become. However, Open Doors say this vision does not give optimism to those hoping for religious freedom.

"Vietnam is still on the Open Doors world watch list - it's numer 20 - so it's very high levels of pesrecution, lots of persecution from the government itself, Christians are really monitored...so it's not a free country. So, it seems that even in his [Trump's] tactic to get economic freedom we're not seeing the freedoms of religion and belief raised even there."

When Christians are discovered they are often deported to labour camps as political criminals or killed on the spot and their families share their fate.

Meeting for worship is done in utmost secrecy and the churches shown to visitors in Pyongyang serve propaganda purposes.

When is prison, Christians are often treated worse than the other prisoners, made to perform the most dangerous tasks, given less food and beaten in the hope that they will denounce their faith.

If a guard succeeds in making a prisoner recant their faith they are given a promotion and guards who show compassion are punished. Most Christians do not survive their imprisonment.
