A North Dakota resolution has been submitted to declare Jesus Christ as ‘King of the World’.
Resolutions do not change law, but express the opinion of the state’s government if they gain assent from both legislative chambers.
Resolution HCR3020 sets out that the state would declare Jesus Christ the king of the world.
Rep. Nico Rios from Williston says the Christian faith is an integral part of the state’s history. “Christianity has played such a foundational role in our society,” he said. “Acknowledging that should not be controversial. Furthermore, recognising our heritage and moral foundation is never a waste of time.”
The American Civil Liberties Union in North Dakota argues it’s a violation of freedom of religion, as it would be declaring one religious affiliation for a state made up of various beliefs.
ACLU advocacy manager Cody Schuler said: “It still sends a message that North Dakota’s government aligns itself with one religious tradition, which is not only unconstitutional but inappropriate in a state that serves a diverse population.”
