The Christian band Newsboys have filed a federal lawsuit against The Roys Report, its editor Julie Roys and journalist Jessica Morris.
The Roys Report is a Christian media outlet, focused on exposing church abuse stories.
Posting on Instagram, the band claimed their “silence has ended”. They have not performed publicly since July 2025, a month after major allegations against its frontman Michael Tait surfaced.
The band’s owner, Wes Campbell, resigned from the Gospel Music Association in July, insisting he had “no idea” about Tait’s behaviour. He is the leader of the lawsuit.
A website, set up by the Newsboys to document the suit states: "The Complaint alleges that it published defamatory articles in 2025 and 2026, making serious accusations regarding a 2014 incident, when in reality, contemporaneous statements made to law enforcement contradicted those accusations, and the Articles did not publish those exonerating statements made to law enforcement.
"The Complaint alleges that the characterization of what actually occurred changed from an innocent, consensual encounter to serious charges under circumstances alleged to be tied to the parties' later alignment with LiveCo/TPR."
In September 2025, The Roys Report released an exclusive article, written by Jessica Morris. It claims that “Newsboys management was—at a bare minimum—aware that Tait had a substance abuse problem.”
The article includes claims from Christian musician Jeremy McCoy, a contemporary of the Newsboys, that Tait frequently missed recording sessions “due to cocaine benders”.
“I don’t know a single person who works in that industry that doesn’t know,” McCoy told TRR.
In their Instagram post, the band states they have chosen "not to comment beyond the filing itself".
