New Ten Commandments monument shattered within hours

Authorities have detained a 32 year old man on suspicion of crashing his vehicle into the statue outside the state Capitol building in Little Rock on Wednesday.

Republican Sen Jason Rapert, the state politician who spear-headed the monument's erection said: "Obviously, I'm very disappointed that someone would carry out an act of violence that's actually against the people of Arkansas."

The arrest of Michael Tate Reed from Van Buren in Arkansas came nearly three years after he was detained over the destruction of a monument outside Oklahoma's state Capitol.

During a Facebook Live video posted on the account of a user called Michael Reed, a man is heard growling "Oh my goodness. Freedom!" before his vehicle collides with the statue.

Sen Rapert said he was confident a replacement for the broken six foot granite monument - which weighs 2,721 kilogrammes - would be found.

Mr Reed was held on preliminary charges of defacing objects of public interest, criminal trespass and first-degree criminal mischief.

Earlier this week, the American Civil Liberties Union said it planned to legally challenge the monument, claiming it was an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.
