A new documentary investigating global megachurch Hillsong has reflected on the ministry of Carl Lentz.

Lentz is a former pastor of Hillsong NYC and is known for establishing strong links with a number of high-profile celebrities, including Justin Bieber.

In 2020, Lentz was removed from his position by former global leader Brian Houston after “moral failure” and rumours of an extra-marital affair.

The documentary featured a number of talking heads, including former Hillsong attendee Jaclyn Hayes, who reflected on the dating rules laid out by the ex-pastor.

According to Hayes, Lentz encouraged couples to date for a whole year before having their first kiss, and to wait until they were engaged to say “I love you”.

When Hayes admitted to having sex with her then-boyfriend once, they were both stripped of their roles on their respective church teams and were encouraged to break up.

She claims they were told not to “date, text or call” one another.

The two-part documentary is airing on TLC across the 28th and 29th of December at 10pm.

According to the announcement, “The brand-new hour on TLC will explore the most recent developments surrounding the Hillsong Church, including how the bombshell claims revealed in the docuseries have rocked the church and its members”.
