Britain’s ambassador to the Holy See is one of the few postings where diplomatic uniforms live on. The new representative is continuing the tradition, having shared a behind-the-scenes video of getting fitted for the outfit.

Tammy Sandhu, who takes up the role in the Vatican City this month, took part in the ‘get ready with me’ social media trend for the Foreign Office.

The uniform, first introduced in 1781, is a dark blue single-breasted tail coat, with guilt braiding and buttons, a stand collar, black velvet gauntlet cuffs. White gloves are also worn, with the ambassador carrying a sword.

It is worn in the presence of the Pope, for Masses and other ceremonies.

“It’s a huge honour and privilege to be the first ethnic minority female to wear this diplomatic uniform”, Sandhu said in the video, “I only wish that my parents could see this moment. But I will absolutely represent the UK with pride as I take up my role as ambassador to the Holy See.”

The post states that Sandhu “will work with the Vatican on global challenges from peacebuilding to humanitarian action, AI ethics and supporting women and girls worldwide".

Chris Trott, who served as Britain’s representative to the Holy See for five years, bid farewell to the role at the end of June.

Very few diplomatic uniforms remain for British ambassadors, being worn today in Spain and Thailand.
