A new mobile game developed by UK-based charity Discipleship Tech is reimagining how people encounter the Bible.
The Serpent & The Seed is being pitched as a poetic narrative adventure game that aims to introduce the story of Jesus to players who might never open a Bible.
The project, two decades in the making, is the brainchild of Discipleship Tech CEO Andy Geers, known for the award-winning PrayerMate app.
“In a world ruled by a serpent, his thorns & thistles choke the earth. But whispers speak of a long forgotten book that tells of a way to end his reign,” reads the game’s description.
Combining visual storytelling, puzzles, and a soundtrack by US indie folk duo Poor Bishop Hooper, The Serpent & The Seed guides players through the overarching narrative of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation.
Anglican Bishop of Lancaster, Jill Duff, praised the game’s immersive design and faith-based storytelling: “It’s absolutely beautiful and compelling… my hope is that this game will breathe the oxygen of faith into young hearts who might otherwise never discover the living words of the Bible.”
Amy Green, writer of the BAFTA-winning That Dragon, Cancer, contributed to the narrative and said she was “honoured to have contributed to this beautiful story of faith".
Rev Dr Andrew Sach of Grace Church Greenwich likened the game’s impact to that of medieval mystery plays and the hit TV series The Chosen: “To my surprise, a computer game turns out to be one of the most effective storytelling media of all… we are helped to experience the tragedy of a former paradise now overgrown with thorns and thistles, and to rejoice in its eventual renewal.”
With a focus on storytelling, spirituality, and artistic excellence, The Serpent & The Seed aims to reframe the way the gospel is experienced in the digital age.
