An MP who admitted to "culpably and recklessly" exposing the public to the risk of Covid-19 by going to church after developing symptoms will appeal against a proposed 30-day ban from the House of Commons.

Margaret Ferrer MP was found to have broken Covid rules in 2020 after she went to a church service and took a train to Glasgow with symptoms of the virus.

The Archdiocese of Glasgow said at the time of the incident: "For the good of the whole community, it is important that anyone who is required to self-isolate does so in accordance with the Government's guidance, so anyone in that situation should not attend mass."

In August last year, she was sentenced to 270 hours of community service after pleading guilty to exposing people "to the risk of infection, illness and death".

The representative of Rutherglen and Hamilton West was elected as an MP with the SNP but now sits as an independent MP as she lost the party's whip following her actions.

In March, the Commons' Standards Committee recommended that she should be suspended after an investigation into her conduct was started in October.

The investigation found her actions had "caused significant damage" to the reputation of the House of Commons.

Ferrer has asked the Independent Expert Panel (IEP) to review her 30-day suspension that could trigger a potential by-election in her Rutherglen and Hamilton West seats.
