More than 190 countries commit to alleviating poverty

by Hannah Tooley

They follow on from the Millennium Development Goals in 2000 and more than 190 countries have voluntarily signed up.

Jean Leston, from Operation Noah, an ecumenical Christian charity, told Premier global warming is one of the things all countries are committing to help end: "I think we realise now that unless we tackle climate change, we are going to undo all of the progress we have made now in international development.

"Going forwards we obviously can't afford that to happen."

She stressed that these goals will take work: "These are highly ambitious goals and they are voluntary commitments - the message is loud and clear, this is the way countries say they want to go and already we're starting to see signs on the ground that it really will shape the future."

She added that Pope Francis had spoken on the issue of climate change when addressing Congress, he spoke about how the issue is real and current: "This is an issue we have to deal with now, President Obama's response to that was 'we must wake ourselves from our slumber, this is a real issue and a Christian issue and we need to address it now'."
