Methodist Church implementing safeguarding changes after abuse report

by Aaron James

The Methodist Council, which undertakes work for the Church on a quarterly basis, said that a draft supervision policy for ministers, guidance on best practice for record-keeping and storage and a review of the Church's safeguarding material have all been done since the report in May this year.

The independent Methodist Church report in May found 1,885 allegations of sexual, physical, emotional and domestic abuse towards people under its care since the 1950s.

The Church issued an unreserved apology and vowed to implement the 23 recommendations the report made to better protect people, particularly children, young people and vulnerable adults.

The Methodist Council also said there will be an annual independent check on the progress of the recommendation's implementation every year until "more robust accountability structures" were in place.

Revd Dr Helen Cameron, Assistant Secretary of the Methodist Conference, said: "The recommendations invite us to explore ways of developing excellence in our practice in accountable ways.

""They also invite us to ensure that ministries offered in the name of the Methodist Church promote the fullness of life for which Christ came."
