Megachurch pastor Andy Stanley to host conference for parents with LGBT kids

by Tola Mbakwe

A US megachurch has announced it will host a conference specifically for parents who have children that identify as LGBT.

North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia, led by Pastor Andy Stanley will hold the Unconditional Conference in September.

The conference has been organised by a ministry named Embracing the Journey, whose mission is to “build bridges between LGBTQ+ individuals, their families, and the church, not in spite of the Bible but because of the Bible, drawing parents and children into a deeper relationship with each other and vertically with God.”

Its founders, Greg and Lynn McDonald, have raised a gay child within the Conservative Christian culture and said they have coached or counselled several hundred Christian parents on how to do the same.

Stanley is listed as one of the five speakers in the two-day conference and praised the McDonalds for tackling “tough issues with grace, compassion, and integrity.”

The son of famous pastor and author Dr Charles Stanley was recently the centre of controversy after a video clip of his comments about gay people went viral.

Speaking during a conference last May, he said those in the LGBT community who attend church have a lot more faith than other churchgoers.

"A gay person who still wants to attend church after the way they've been treated, I'm telling you, they have more faith than I do. They have more faith than a lot of you."

The conference will be held 28th-29th September.
