Max Lucado takes over from Robert Morris' son amidst abuse investigation

by Anna Rees Green

Best-selling Christian author and pastor, Max Lucado, has taken over as interim pastor of Gateway Church, Dallas, as Robert Morris’ son steps down.

James Morris and his wife Bridgette had taken over leadership of the megachurch, after 54 year old Cindy Clemishire alleged that founding pastor Robert Morris had sexually abused her as twelve year old.

James and Bridgette say they were unaware of his father’s history, but had been advised to resign by law firm Haynes & Boone LLP, who are conducting an independent investigation into Robert Morris.

A statement by Gateway Church said: “Earlier this week, the elders met with pastors James and Bridgette, and they collectively made the decision that pastors James and Bridgette would both step down from their current positions and from leading Gateway Church in the future.

“We as elders affirm and believe that God has placed a desire in both Pastors James and Bridgette’s hearts to serve as senior pastors of a church at some point in the future. We love Pastors James and Bridgette and their children. We deeply care about them and sincerely thank them for investing their lives here at Gateway Church.”

On Sunday 27th July, church elder Tra Wilbanks gave an update on the situation, directly addressing Cindy Clemishire:

“Cindy, in case you are watching, we want to apologise on behalf of our entire church for the years of pain you have endured.

“We apologise for our initial communication which we got wrong. You were a child, not a young lady... I’m sorry that we got that communication wrong.”

James and Bridgette were then invited onto stage to address the congregation.

“We love you all so much,” said James, "it's been an honour to lead. We are very excited about the future of Gateway."

Bridgette choked back tears, before sayings: “It feels like it’s the ending of one season and the beginning of a new one... but we do grieve not being here with you. We're still family.”

Lucado is minister of Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio, Texas. Two weeks prior to his temporary appointment, he delivered a guest sermon at Gateway titled Keep God at the Center, You’ll Get Through This.

Lucado will remain the pastor of Oak Hills, and will teach at both locations.
