A man in the US has been charged with attempted arson after a fire broke out at a church that was preparing to host a drag event.
Aimenn Penny, aged 20, stands accused of using Molotov cocktails in an attempt to set fire to the Ohio-based Community Church of Chesterland, on the 1st of April.
The church continued with their plans to host the “drag story hour” despite the attack.
The FBI says Penny admitted to planning and carrying out the attack during a search of his apartment, where it is reported Penny kept a wealth of Nazi-related memorabilia.
It is believed Penny attended the event dressed in “Nazi apparel,” and making obvious threats to those attending.
He’s been indicted for “violating the Church Arson Prevention Act,” as well as on one count of using fire to commit a federal felony , one count of malicious use of explosive
materials, and one count of possessing a destructive device.
Law enforcement officials in Ohio have publically shared speculation about Penny’s involvement with the controversial “White Lives Matter” group.
The group adopted their slogan following the Black Lives Matter (BLM) social justice movement, and is in contradiction to BLM beliefs.
The Community Church of Chesterland describes itself as “a church of extravagant welcome, inclusion and justice.”
According to their website, they are “at the forefront of social justice and women’s rights” and are “proud participants” of the Cleveland Pride festival every year.
