Locals raise £1,800 to save stained glass at Taunton church

by Lydia Davies

A historic church in Taunton is appealing for £900 to complete repairs on a 130-year-old stained glass window damaged during last winter’s storms.

St Andrew’s, known locally as The Railway Church, has already raised £1,800 towards the restoration of the window, which depicts Jesus between Moses and Elijah.

Insurance would not cover the cost as the exact date of the damage could not be confirmed.

Speaking of the storm damange, church warden David Butt told the County Gazette: "The lead came away from the arms of Jesus. We had to protect it with polycarbonate on both sides to stop the whole window from collapsing."

The church has launched a GoFundMe page for the final stage of the appeal, which will also cover a survey of other windows at risk. Repairs are scheduled for February 2025.

Butt added: "This GoFundMe is one last push from the community. The final £900 will mean we can pay the repair bill and also fund a survey of other stained glass windows we know are damaged."
