Wimbledon commenced on July 1st, starting off a fortnight of tennis action.
This year, Emma Raducanu is returning to play in the competition after a two-year absence. The British former no.1 missed last year’s tournament after undergoing surgery on her wrists and one of her ankles.
Raducanu's 90-year-old grandmother, Niculina, has revelaed that she stays informed about her tennis star granddaughter through her local priest in Bucharest, as she doesn't have cable TV.
Niculina, a devout Christian, told the Mail Online: "When I go to church, the priest informs me of her latest news because I don't have cable TV."
According to the news outlet, the priest watches the sports news and keeps Niculina updated on Emma’s performance, relaying the news she hears on the radio.
Niculina, affectionately called 'Mamiya' by Emma, lives in a flat in a Communist-era block on the edge of Bucharest.
As Emma, the 2021 US Open champion, prepared to face world No. 22, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova on Centre Court, her grandmother sent her best wishes, emphasising the importance of her health. She said: "She must trust herself and God and be careful not to get injured again."
