Liz Truss will 'go to hell' after sanctions on Patriarch Kirill, says Russian state TV presenter

A Russian TV host has insulted Liz Truss for sanctioning the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, amid the war in Ukraine.

Vladimir Solovyov, commonly known as 'Putin's voice', accused the foreign secretary of "organising the persecution of Christians" and said the place for her is "hell".

Last week, Patriarch Kirill was among people sanctioned by the UK government for their involvement in Russia's war in Ukraine.

Truss said the 75-year-old cleric had been sanctioned because he "repeatedly abused his position to justify the war".

But the decision prompted a slew of insults by Solovyov during his TV show, 'An Evening With Vladimir Solovyov' on Russia's state channel - he said Truss was "declaring a religious war against Russia".

"Liz Truss is proud that she added Patriarch Kirill to the list of sanctioned persons. How are we to understand that?" Solovyov said.

"She fancies herself the Foreign Minister, but of what?'… A country that has already betrayed faith, because of the lust of its King which begot the Church of England? So what is that?

"And now she, imagining herself who knows what, is trying to persecute the holiest patriarch? Is Liz Truss declaring a religious war against Russia? A war against all Orthodoxy?"

He continued: "This poorly educated citizen, who graduated from a decent institute of learning, she has such delusions of grandeur? Such phantasmagoric [sic] audacity has been unheard of since the times of Tatars and Mongols.

"Who does she think she is? Who is she? She can make history only by persecuting the holiest Patriarch. The place for such is in hell, obviously," he concluded as he pointed to the camera with his finger.

The extract of the programme was published on Twitter by journalist Julia Davis, who monitors Russian TV.

She was sanctioned by Russia in May.

Heavenly Father, hear our prayers for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine.

Lord we ask for peace for those who need peace, reconciliation for those who need reconciliation and comfort for all who don't know what tomorrow will bring. Lord may your Kingdom come, and Your will be done.

Lord God, we ask for you to be with all - especially children who are suffering as the crisis in Ukraine deteriorates. Lord for those who are anxious and fearful. For those who are bereaved, injured or who have lost their lives. And for those who have lost loved ones.

In Jesus' name,
Amen
