Liverpool Cathedral recognised with Eco award

by Donna Birrell

Liverpool Cathedral has been awarded an Eco Church Silver Award for its dedication to environmental sustainability.

The recognition, from the Christian conservation charity A Rocha UK, also celebrates the community's role as a leader in eco church practices.

The Dean of Liverpool Very Rev Dr Sue Jones, welcomed the news, especially as it comes in the centenary year of the cathedral's consecration:

“The staff at the Cathedral and those who have advised have worked really hard over the past year to gain this Silver Award. As a Cathedral we are delighted that this has been achieved after a lot of hard work to re-think our practices. Net Zero is really important to us and we will continue to strive for this and to care for God’s world.”

Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral in the UK and the fifth largest in the world. The award is being seen as a milestone in its ongoing mission to unite faith with action for the good of the planet. A Rocha UK says that the Eco Church Silver Award celebrates the Cathedral’s efforts to care for God’s creation, transforming its spaces into vibrant sanctuaries for wildlife and promoting sustainable practices that inspire the wider community.

In recognition of the award, the Cathedral is aiming to encourage churches across the Diocese of Liverpool to embrace sustainable practices and join the Eco Church movement. This effort also ties into the Church of England’s ambitious Net Zero 2030 goal, demonstrating the importance of collective action in reducing carbon emissions and safeguarding the environment.
