Famous US rapper Lil Nas X is facing criticism after declaring he has entered his "Christian era." The artist, known for stirring resentment among Christians with his 'Satan shoes' adorned with Bible verses, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a snippet of a song in which he referred to God as "Father."
Lil Nas X, raised in an Atlanta home by a pastor and former Gospel singer, has a complex relationship with religion. His sexuality, disclosed in an interview with British GQ magazine, prompted him to reevaluate his religious upbringing, describing coming out as gay as a personal "test."
In his recent post, the rapper sang lyrics like, "Father, stretch my hands. The lonely road seems to last the longest. Help me with my plans. Everything seems to go to nowhere." However, the post quickly garnered backlash, with critics accusing him of "mocking Christianity."
US actor Tyrese Gibson expressed his disapproval, stating, "Y'all gone learn to stop playing with God [...] God is not to be played with. From shoes with devil signs and devil's blood in the [shoe] sole? We can all change, I get it, but I feel a way about people making a mockery of Jesus."
In response to the criticism, Lil Nas X expressed confusion, saying, "This really is crazy because all I did was post a song about asking God for hope when you feel hopeless, and y'all are acting like I posted a video of me burning a church down and peeing on a nativity scene."
