Vice President Kamala Harris reportedly called her pastor on the night she decided to run for President of the United States.

On Sunday 21st July, Rev Amos C. Brown was leading the service at Third Baptist Church of San Francisco, when he received a note informing him of President Joe Biden's decision not to seek re-election.

After the service, Harris called Brown, seeking prayers for her upcoming presidential campaign, according to a report by Sojourners. 

"She said to me, ‘Pastor, I called because I want you to pray for me, [my husband] Doug, this country, and the race I intend to run for President,’” Brown recalled.

He continued: “We exchanged pleasantries, I congratulated her because she’ll be a great President, and we had a prayer. She was so gracious and thankful that I took the time.”

Brown recounted how he reminded Harris of Micah 6:8's teachings on justice and humility in their conversation.

“That’s what we need in this nation. There’s too much arrogance and egocentricity after all this Trumpism,” he said.

Brown said he has known Harris and her family for over two decades, calling Harris’ mother “a terrific scholar and scientist".

Shyamala Gopalan Harris was a Hindu from Chennai, India, who worked on breast cancer research. Harris’s father, Donald Harris, is a professor emeritus at Stanford University from the Baptist tradition.

Growing up, her parents exposed her to both Hindu and Baptist faiths.

In her 2019 memoir, Harris reflected: “My earliest memories of the Bible's teachings introduced me to a loving God-one who commands us to ‘speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves’ and to ‘defend the rights of the poor and needy.’”

Brown went on to praise Harris's decision to join Third Baptist Church due to its historical involvement in civil rights movements.
