Joy Morgan, 21, disappeared after attending a churchcelebration in Ilford, east London, on Boxing Day last year.
Shohfah-El Israel, 40, from Cricklewood, north London, is alleged to have killed Ms Morgan between December 26 and December 30 2018.
He denies the charge.
Before being selected, jurors were asked if they had any connection to the Israel United in Christ church in Ilford.
The panel was sent home after being sworn in, to return at 10am on Tuesday for an opening speech by prosecutor Mark Fenhalls QC.
A bespectacled Israel, represented by Ed Brown QC, stood in the dock at Reading Crown Court wearing a blue suit and holding a crutch.
The trial, being heard by Mr Justice Soole, is expected to last up to four weeks.
Members of Ms Morgan's family were at court for the hearing, as well as relatives of the defendant.
