John Piper's son becomes TikTok star for his anti-evangelical videos

Abraham Piper, the son of US pastor and author John Piper, has become a TikTok sensation for posting videos denouncing evangelical Christianity.

With more than 900,000 followers on the video-sharing platform, Piper posts videos, often walking through the streets of his hometown Minneapolis, that are intended to be humorous but also contain strong criticism of many evangelical values.

In one of his most-watched videos, Piper describes evangelicalism as "a destructive, narrow-minded worldview".

"Is one of my themes attacking Christianity? No. I don't attack Christianity. I berate evangelicalism. Fundamentalism," he said.

"Evangelicalism is a toddler tradition that's cousins with Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy and the snot-nosed little sibling of mainline Protestant denominations. So yes, I'm out here saying that fundamentalism is bizarre, anti-intellectual bull****. But that's not me attacking Christianity. Christianity is a big family. I'm just saying that one of the kids is being kind of a brat. And most of the rest of the family agrees."

Designer of jigsaws, artist and co-founder of a digital medial company, Piper only started posting videos on TikTok last November which have already achieved millions of views. In his videos, he also criticises his evangelical upbringing, the Bible and compares the miracle of the resurrection with bowling.

Abraham's father, John Piper, 75, is most known for his strict Calvinist values and for leading Bethlehem Baptist Church for 33 years. Abraham Piper, 39, was expelled from his father's church when he was 19 years old for not adhering to the church's values but was welcomed back four years later. However, he subsequently broke away from it and has not returned since.
