Jesus joke makes it into top ten funniest at Edinburgh Fringe

by Antony Bushfield

Mark Nelson's one liner at the festival made it to number six.

"Jesus fed 5,000 people with two fishes and a loaf of bread. That's not a miracle. That's tapas," he told audiences at his show in the Scottish capital.

A judging panel of 10 critics drew up a shortlist of gags which were then voted on by 2,000 people, who did not know which comic had said them.

Darren Walsh walked away with the award for number one with his line: "I just deleted all the German names off my phone. It's Hans free".

The competition has previously been won by luminaries including Tim Vine, a Christian.

"I've decided to sell my Hoover ... well, it was just collecting dust," scooped him the prize in 2014.

Paul Kerensa, Christian comedian and writer, told Premier's News Hour "Humour's very much a binary thing, it either works or it doesn't - and if you don't like you can go 'how dare you think that was funny?' or even try to be funny.

"But there's a difference between what we find funny or not and what we find offensive or not."

He added: "We live in a nice society where we can say these things with that sort of freedom.

"I think we've got to distinguish between things that are mentioned in a joke, and things that are the butt of a joke, so I think on this occasion it's more a joke at the expense of tapas than it as about Jesus."
