'Jesus is my life': Usyk gives glory to God after undisputed heavyweight victory

by Tola Mbakwe

Oleksandr Usyk has given God the glory after once again becoming the undisputed heavyweight boxing world champion.

The Ukrainian beat Britain's Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night.

When asked about the win and what’s next for him, Usyk said: “I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and Wembley — thank you so much! This is for the people.

“Nothing is next. It’s enough. What’s next? I don’t know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children — I just want to rest now. Two or three months, I just want to rest.”

In a post-match press conference, Usyk shared more about his testimony after a reporter asked him how being a Christian has made him a better boxer and a better person.

“I don’t know how many years I will live. I pray every day, every night and morning, and evening. On Sunday, when I have the opportunity, I go to church. I take Orthodox fasting. I love this world. Jesus is my life. Boxing is great... God cleans my soul.”

He was then asked how his relationship with Jesus shapes how he fights in the ring and how he lives his life.

Through a translator, he replied: “Before I started boxing, I had my faith in God, but I was an angry kid. After I started boxing, my soul changed. I started to feel more loved. I thought life was not fair to me because it was very hard. Now I know life is fair to me, and God helps me.

"When someone who doesn’t know me tries to be rude or offend me, I know he is going to lose. But I just need to walk away and not make a scene. And when I’m leaving, I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, I could knock him out — but thank God I didn’t do it,’” he joked.

Usyk, who improved his professional record to 24-0, is now a three-time undisputed champion — twice in the heavyweight division and once as a cruiserweight.

The Ukrainian also hinted at a potential third fight against Britain's Tyson Fury, whom he beat twice last year.
