Christian Aid reports £12m drop in income

by Rachel Huston

Christian Aid, the international development charity, has reported a £12 million fall in income, according to accounts filed at Companies House this week.

The charity recorded an income of £71.1 million for the year ending March 2025, down from £83.3 million in the previous 12 months.

The largest drop came from institutional grants, while individual donors and legacies continued to give at a similar rate to last year. Donations from individuals totalled £52.2 million, a slight decrease from £52.6 million in 2023/24. However, income from institutional grants fell by 40 per cent, from £29.5 million in 2023/24 to £18 million in 2024/25.

This included a loss of £6 million in funding from the United Nations World Food Programme, which dropped from £8.2 million to £2.3 million over the period. The fall in institutional support is partly the result of aid cuts, including the end of USAID funding.

Christian Aid posted an operating deficit for the year to March 2025, with costs declining slightly to £77.0 million.

In April, the charity announced plans to restructure and move to a partnership model for delivering support, reducing staff numbers from around 720 to 400.

Christian Aid says it aims to operate under a new model and to remain at least 60 per cent voluntary.

Most UK charities are experiencing similar pressures. According to the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), the proportion of people donating has fallen to 50 per cent, compared with an average of 58 per cent over the past five years.

Christian Aid was established in 1943 as Christian Reconstruction in Europe (CRE) by major British and Irish churches within the British Council of Churches. Its original aim was to raise funds for the relief and resettlement of millions left homeless in Europe following the Second World War. Since then, it has grown into an international development charity working around the world.
