According to World Watch Monitor, K. A. Swamy, 47 and a professor of engineering, was hauled before police by local Hindus last week after he was founding giving out Bibles and other leaflets about Jesus in the southern city of Hyderabad.
K. A. Swamy was working for Gideons International, a charity which gives out Bibles and other Christian literature away for free, in places like hotel rooms.
He was evangelising close to a prominent Hindu temple in the city - something locals questioned him about (below) before forcing him to go the police.
Police questioned him for six hours on suspicion of attempting to convert people by force. When he was allowed to leave, he suffered a brain haemorrhage on the way home and is now in a coma in hospital.
His wife Sujatha has asked people to pray for him.
The Indian government's agreed to pay for his medical care after requests from local Christians.
His brother-in-law told the Monitor: "Several times in the past also he has been caught by extremists from Vishwa Hindu Parishad [a Hindu nationalist group] and has been threatened. He has also been taken to the police station for verification many times before. This time he just couldn't take it.
"When I asked some Vishwa Hindu Parishad members, whom I know because of my profession as a businessman, about why they had detained him in the police station the whole day, they told me that they have over 200 photos of him distributing Bibles and tracts; these are the evidences of his converting people and that he was guilty."
India is ranked the 15th most difficult place in the world to be a Christian on Open Doors' World Watch List.
It's reported increasing attacks on Christians by Hindu nationalists since President Narendra Modi (below) came to power in 2014.
Between 2014 to July 2016, Christian groups in India have recorded around 424 cases of violence against believers, with many more believed to be unreported.
Meanwhile, advocacy charity Christian Solidarity Worldwide is calling on the Indian government to ensure that on the country's Republic Day on January 26, it ensures no abuses happen against Christians and other minorities.
Republic Day 2017 celebrates 68 years of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees "liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship" for all its citizens.
CSW's Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said, "On this important day, we call on the Indian government to give due attention to the Constitution, which grants every citizen, despite his or her religion or caste, the freedom to profess, practise and propagate his or her religion without fear of reprisal."
